The ADA/ODA partnered Relief and Disaster Grants Program is a charitable entity that offers aid to dental professionals and their dependents who, because of misfortune, age, physical disability, chemical dependence, or other hindering conditions, are not wholly self-sustaining. This program exists to award financial aid to Oklahoma dentists and other dental entities in their greatest time of need, yet relies solely on the contributions of fellow dentists.
There are two types of grants given to dentists in need.
Relief Grant: available to dentists, their dependents, and former dependents of deceased dentists who are eligible for financial aid due to accidental injury, advanced age, physically debilitating illness or medically-related condition that prevents them from gainful employment and results in an inability to be wholly self-sustaining.
Disaster Grant: available to dentists who are victims of a disaster. Eligibility of all grants is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
For example, in 2011, a devastating F-5 tornado hit Joplin, Missouri. Among the damages, 25 dental offices were lost. How does one recover from the tragedy of seeing your life’s work reduced to rubble? Through generous donations like the $5,000 contribution the Relief and Disaster Program gave to the Missouri Dental Foundation to support the rebuilding process. The natural disaster in Missouri could have easily happened in our own backyard and it is important that we are prepared. With the Relief and Disaster Program’s current resources, it would not be possible to support a dental community if disaster struck at home.
