When, where & how to treat our patients as they age. A review of geriatric dentistry principles including treatment techniques, medical implications, standards of care, treating difficult denture patients, and the controversial topic of disease maintenance will be discussed. After applying the knowledge and insight presented, attendees should gain a new perspective to the personal, professional, and spiritual satisfaction possible through treating this needy patient population. By the conclusion of the presentation, the participant should be able to:
  • Identify and address medical conditions associated with older patients and develop age appropriate oral health treatment plans;
  • Treat difficult denture patients with less chair time, more patient success, and increased doctor satisfaction;
  • Recognize when, where, and how to treat an older patient from a functional Alzheimer’s patient to a bed bound nursing home patient;
  • Determine when no treatment is the best treatment and comprehend when oral disease elimination is in the patient’s best interest; and
  • Identify oral health care funding mechanisms in the United States for the aging population as well as national oral health advocacy efforts currently taking place.
