Back to School with a Healthy Smile
Thank you to all of the dentists that participated in the 2014 Back to School with a Healthy Smile program.
Volunteer dentists were able to provide free dental screenings to elementary school children throughout the week of September 8–12, 2014.
The ODA partnered with MobileSmiles Oklahoma to screen children at five different elementary schools throughout the state. The program also allowed for member dentists to be spotlighted in their hometown newspapers and other media outlets to promote their involvement in their community.
“I am beyond blessed to live and work in such a great community and want to give back. Providing free dental screenings to children is a great opportunity to do that,” said Dr. Nicki Schafer, ODA Member from Chandler, OK. “I believe that providing free screenings to children brings awareness to parents about their child's dental needs that if taken care of may improve performance in school and overall quality of life both at home and in school.”
Since more than 51 million school hours are lost each year because of dental-related illnesses, early detection of tooth decay is vital. Left untreated, dental decay can cause pain, problems with eating and sleeping, and prevent children from focusing in school. A simple dental screening will detect any problems your child might have and will also provide an opportunity for you to evaluate your child’s brushing habits and overall oral hygiene.
