Course Objectives

  • Understand the basics of exposure: shutter speed, aperture, depth of field, ISO and white balance and how each is manipulated for dental photography
  • Competency in taking extraoral and intraoral photography and the photo series for digital smile design
  • Understand the basic camera setup and pros and cons of each equipment part; feel comfortable to make educated purchases
  • Understand different flash systems: ring, dual flash, strobe and speedlights
  • Understand function of different armamentarium and dental accessories
  • Learn how to troubleshoot common photography problems

Course Description

Dental photography has changed the landscape of dentistry. It has become a necessity in dental practices for: 1) treatment planning, 2) digital smile design, 3) communication with dental labs, insurance companies, etc., 4) marketing and practice promotion, 5) legal documentation and numerous other reasons. Whether you have no experience with dental photography or already have a favorite camera system, come receive one-on-one training with all aspects of dental photography including basic light manipulation and equipment know-how.  This course can help you either master what you already have (i.e. bring your own camera) or help you figure out what you need. There will be multiple cameras and flash systems for you to try out. Come take your photography and dental practice to the next level!   

The following equipment will be available for you to try out:

  • Canon DSLRs with Canon 100mm macro lens
  • Ring Flash (Wireless and Non-wireless)
  • Twin Dual Flash on Bracket Arms with 4 different types of bouncers and softboxes
  • Dual speedlight flash system for intraoral photography (for clinicians who do not want the flash set on camera body itself)
  • Dual strobe light flash system for portrait photography
  • Photography Armamentarium: cheek retractors, mirrors (occlusal, side), mirror handles, contrastors, portrait backdrops

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Jessica Hsieh is a Board-Certified Prosthodontist with a passion for complex esthetic reconstructions and full-arch implant rehabilitation. She received her D.D.S degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Dentistry, where she graduated with honors. She then attended the University of Connecticut, School of Dental Medicine, where she obtained her Advanced Prosthodontics training, Masters in Dental Science, and Surgical Certificate in Implant Placement, Bone Augmentation and Pre-prosthetic surgery. Dr. Hsieh believes strongly in dental education and currently is a Clinical Associate Professor at OU College of Dentistry in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and AEGD departments as well as a Lecturer at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Her research interests range from strength modifications of new nanoceramics to utilizing photography and post-processing software to analyze enamel color changes.


She started her photography journey as a dental student and quickly saw how it improved patient communication and treatment acceptance in every stage of her career. Her goal is to constantly look for new, more efficient ways to speak to patients through the camera. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontists, Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists, President of the American College of Prosthodontists Oklahoma Section, and a member of numerous local, state and national societies.
