Course Objectives

  • Feel confident in accurate shade taking and how to use different photos to communicate with your lab (i.e. polarized photos)
  • Recognize how to use a grey card to white balance your photos
  • Understand how to avoid specular light and achieve glossy effect
  • Understand how different flashes and their positions affect texture, chroma and shadows to accomplish artistic photos
  • Understand how to take object photography using a shadow box and speed lights
  • Understand how to catalog photos and basics of Adobe Lightroom

 

Course Description

After mastering the basics for achieving ideal exposure, we will delve into four realms: 1) accurate shade-taking and essential photos needed for good dental lab communication, 2) artistic dental photos, 3) object/product photography using shadow boxes and speedlights, 4) post-photo organization and storage. This course assumes that you are comfortable with the basics of exposure: shutter speed, aperture, depth of field, ISO and white balance. Although not required, it is recommended to bring your own shade guides and what photos your lab normally requires of you. As a bonus, come bring any pictures you have seen on social media that you want to replicate, as I will help you achieve it! Come elevate your photography! This course requires that you bring your own camera body and macro lens – different flash systems will be available for you to try out.

  • Canon DSLRs with Canon 100mm macro lens
  • Flash Polarizers
  • Ring Flash (Wireless and Non-wireless)
  • Twin Dual Flash on Bracket Arms with Lumniquest Bouncers and Softboxes
  • Speedlight setup for portrait photography
  • Strobe light setup for artistic dental photography
  • Murilo Calgaro’s ShadowBox with multiple backgrounds and speedlights
  • Photography Armamentarium: cheek retractors, mirrors (occlusal, side), mirror handles, contrastors, portrait backdrops

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Jessica Hsieh is a Board-Certified Prosthodontist with a passion for complex esthetic reconstructions and full-arch implant rehabilitation. She received her D.D.S degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Dentistry, where she graduated with honors. She then attended the University of Connecticut, School of Dental Medicine, where she obtained her Advanced Prosthodontics training, Masters in Dental Science, and Surgical Certificate in Implant Placement, Bone Augmentation and Pre-prosthetic surgery. Dr. Hsieh believes strongly in dental education and currently is a Clinical Associate Professor at OU College of Dentistry in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and AEGD departments as well as a Lecturer at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Her research interests range from strength modifications of new nanoceramics to utilizing photography and post-processing software to analyze enamel color changes.

She started her photography journey as a dental student and quickly saw how it improved patient communication and treatment acceptance in every stage of her career. Her goal is to constantly look for new, more efficient ways to speak to patients through the camera. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontists, Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists, President of the American College of Prosthodontists Oklahoma Section, and a member of numerous local, state and national societies.
